Basically national socialists and communists did hate each other, however as far as their actual policies go, they were both command economies. They're like nationalists in countries A and B. Even though they hate each other like mad, they have probably the same mentality and ideas. Obviously people symphatizing nationalists in country A, are going to say their nationalism is not as retarded as its in country B.

Academia is here is very left-wing, learning their new ideas mainly from the american left-wing. That's also why they have hard time accepting some cold genetics like Hernstein's or Vanhanen's books. They have much more sympathy for socialism than nazis, so they feel a reason to differentiate the ideologies.

However both socialism, communism and national socialism are all very populist, authotarian, prefer command economies and regulate everything. The rhetoric and flavour are different but as far as a citizen is concerned, they end up with limitless amount of state power which dictators use as they please, destroying any individual freedom and usually the economy in the process.

There's a categorical difference between socialism and communism. Socialism is the economical system whereas communism is both the political and economical system.

Noam Chomsky is not an economist, and non-economists know about social sciences as much as public players know about NS mechanics. They fill the public forums like plague, and talk a lot but few people know how clueless they really are.

Personally I don't care if someone doesn't think nazis and communists have a lot in common. This is just an abstract way to categorize ideas and there's not a prior to say which way of abstracting is "better". However both systems are very anti-individual, they endorse ultimate state power, end up with dictators and regulate personal lives and economy with an iron fist. Some people claim that because they have endorse different kind of state power, end up with different dictators, destroy individual freedom in different way, and regulate the economy in a diffferent way (actually this isn't that much true), they're all different. Also they have different slogans, leaders and rhetoric too. I don't claim this is necessarily wrong categorization but personally I don't see that much difference.
